Cherry and Grape

Black cherry (Prunus serotina) and Wild grape (Vitis spp.)

Black cherry is in the family Rosaceae and is a fast growing tree with long oval shaped leaves. After the tree flowers reddish black berries are produced. This tree is native to North America and ranges across the Eastern United States. Black cherry is an economically important species because of its useful timber and edible fruit.

Wild grapes belong to the family Vitaceae. This vining plant produces flowers and berries. Wild grapes are also an economically important species because grapes are cultivated and sold directly or made into wine and other products. Wild grapes provide people with profitable economic products, but they are also a desirable food for many other animals like bears, blue jays, deer, and other small mammals.

Rugar Woods is a tract of land operated by SUNY Plattsburgh and open for the general public. Interpretive and wayfinding trail signs are posted to educate users about local ecology.
