Common Buckthorn

Rhamnus cathartica

Common buckthorn is not native to North America. This plant was introduced from Europe in the 19th century grow as a hedgerow plant. It is now found in forests, urban areas, and wetland edges throughout most of Northern North America.

Common buckthorn can grow up to 20 fee tall. This species is shade tolerant, has low mortality rates, and high growth potential- leading to its success as an invasive species. Common buckthorn can form large thickets were they are the dominant species. It is so invasive that other vegetation is often outcompeted. This may prevent native plant species from establishing and providing important habitats for dependent wildlife. Most mammals do not eat common buckthorn- and since buckthorn can cause declines of other more desirable plant species, their presence can negatively affect herbivores.
